ITALY – A professional footballer has been diagnosed with myocarditis after his COVID-19 vaccination. Pedro Obiang, 29-years-old, received his COVID-19 shot in July. He was hospitalized for around ten days for heart problems. He was recently discharged but can’t play football for a minimum of 6 months. A doctor, who prefers to remain anonymous, confirmed that the footballer was diagnosed with myocarditis: “Yes, I confirm the diagnosis”.
Myocarditis, inflammation of the muscle tissue of the heart (the myocardium), is a particularly serious problem for athletes since it damages and destroys the cells of one of the most important organs for competitive activity. Pedro Obiang who currently plays as a midfielder for Serie A club Sassuolo and the Equatorial Guinea national team, is now unsure whether he’ll ever be able to play football on a professional level again.
It was reported yesterday that Italian volleyball player Francesca Marcon suffered heart problems (pericarditis) as a result of her second Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
